Lifelines cables are typically made with type 316 stainless steel 7×7 aircraft cable with a white PVC coating. The special grade of plastic has been engineered to remain durable and attractive after prolonged exposure to sunlight and seawater. Chemical cleaners and kerosene should not be used to clean plastic-coated cables. PVC coated aircraft cable is commonly used with sailboat rigging.
